Increased maritime trade replaced the caravans and many of the oasis communities sank into obscurity. Today we can rediscover the well preserved past with a journey through the desert dunes and into the mountainous grasslands of what is now known as Xinjiang. Home of the Uygur minority nationality, Xinjiang has a culture, language and appearance markedly different from the rest of China.
